This morning I’ve had a rather intense debate with myself;-) Should I uninstall the IntenseDebate blog commenting system, recently purchased by Automattic the WordPress kings.
After some internet research I found out it was not just me. Other people have had problems with spam not getting filtered properly, comments not showing but was supposed to. Poor, inconsistent browser support and what not. I currently have quite few comments on my blog, so losing a few good comments, and having russian spam show up instead even though marked as spam by me, is a big problem.
So I uninstalled it from my WordPress install, and boy was it a great feeling to see the old, trusty WordPress commenting view. There they were those damn russian spam comments. A few clicks on “spam” and away they faded. And lost comments that was lost in IntenseDebate was back again. Such a nice, peaceful feeling. Why should I use something that sucks so intensely (pun intended)?
IntenseDebate? What a crackpot theory. It looks good on paper/screen, but in reality it’s like an alpha-stage prototype. I have spent enough time on IntenseDebate, so this blog post will be short.
Have a great weekend!
Given this was Last update Nov 2017, could you review the latest revisions?
An update on IntenseDebate? Is it still relevant?
Thx
What about Disqus? I’ve seen many bloggers are using this commenting system. I’m against using any other commenting system on WordPress other than the native one but…
Funny you should ask! I recently tried Disqus on this very blog. I wanted its nice formatting and sexy features, but ended up uninstalling it.
The install process / import of old “native” comments was flaky, and the sync between WordPress and Disqus was unreliable. Actions done in WordPress’ native comment management wasn’t reflected on the site. I needed to use Disqus’ own UI for that… and the two didn’t sync reliably. It made me somewhat neurotic… Never fully trusting that a comment had gotten approved etc.
Always best to keep it simple:)
Just installed it and must admit to not being impressed, just can’t get to around the “What’s the whole point of it?”. Will definitely remove by the end of the day.
Thanks for giving this a first shot! Do you have an alternative to IntenseDebate, or do you just prefer the native commenting system?
Currently I just use the default commenting system in WordPress. Contemplating giving IntenseDebate another shot, as it’s been a while, since I wrote my rant against it.
But I keep thinking – why? What are the prime “must-have” benefits of IntenseDebate? I don’t see it…
Thanks for the info, I’ll make sure NOT to add this plugin to my own website, lol!
